Manchester United are ready to make a surprise bid to try and bring Jonny Evans back to Old Trafford in the January transfer window, according to reports in the British media.

The Daily Mirror is reporting that the Red Devils are pondering a move to re-sign the 29-year-old defender after he was sold by former manager Louis van Gaal to West Brom two and a half years ago.

The same report claims that Jose Mourinho feels that it was a “huge mistake” for Manchester United to have sold the Northern Ireland international back then and are now in the market to try and re-sign him.

However, it is also claimed that Manchester United are likely to have to fight with the likes of Arsenal and neighbours Manchester City for the signature of the centre-half.

Manchester City are said to have had a £20m bid for Evans rejected last summer, and Arsene Wenger is claimed to have “registered” his interest in signing the defender.

The story claims that West Brom would be open to selling Evans in the January transfer window if a bid of around £30m came in.

Manchester United are bound to be linked with a host of players in the coming days and weeks as the January transfer window draws ever nearer.
